Berwick WorkSpace is a joint project between Northumberland County Council and Berwick upon Tweed Borough Council to create a flagship managed business incubation centre in the heart of Berwick upon Tweed, with pedestrian access from Marygate. The Centre is managed by The Tyneside Economic Development Company Ltd (TEDCO) and provides a focus for promoting enterprise. The state of the art facilities encourage and support growth in the town from the wider areas on both sides of the Border. The project is funded by One NorthEast, Northumberland Strategic Partnership, the European Regional Development Fund and Berwick and Northumberland Councils.
What does it look like?
The distinctive and modern building, designed by Malcolm Fraser Architects of Edinburgh, uses natural and local materials wherever possible for exterior finishes. The upper storeys of the courtyard development are timber-clad with locally sourced larch, and Doddington stone is used on all ground floor elevations, making for a building full of character in its careful mix and contrast of materials.
The interior of the building is a unique and welcoming environment featuring original artwork by regional artist Laura Harrington. Each office has its own character and all offer interesting views of Berwick town and setting.
The former traditional space of Boarding School Yard provides a pleasant place to relax during sunny afternoons and evenings. It has been transformed into a lively and well connected place. Opening pedestrian routes give improved access between Berwick’s main streets - Marygate, Walkergate, and the library.
